The FEEC. 103 years of celebrating the mountains
In Catalonia, the excursionist movement was born with the Catalan associationism of the end of the 19th century, a trend that accommodated the different cultural, nationalist and sporting trends of the time. Years after the creation of the first hiking societies, in January 1920 the commission was created that would draw up the bases of the then-named League of Excursionist Societies of Catalonia, chaired by Cèsar August Torras. The League was the organization that we can consider the genesis of what would later become the Federation of Excursionist Organizations of Catalonia (FEEC). The FEEC currently has the competences for all activities and mountain sports in Catalonia, whether competitive or not, it has almost 45,000 federated members and 81,000 members of the 428 hiking organizations and clubs that are spread throughout Catalonia.
From the FEEC we work on training. We promote competition and high-level sport through the technical centers, the sports teams and the regulation of competitions. We promote mountain culture. We manage 20 mountain refuges spread throughout the country. But above all we work to promote hiking in all its aspects. With regard to hiking, through the 106 entities and the more than 300 caretakers who mark and maintain with paint much of the more than 12,000 kilometers of approved trails (GR®, PR®-C and SL®-C) that they tour Catalonia. Some of which coincide with 3 E-pats that cross the entire European continent: the E-4, the E-7 and the E-12. We will organize for the third time the annual congress of the European Federation in Catalonia. Montserrat (1991), the Val d’Aran (2002) and again in Montserrat (from 3 to 6 October 2024).
See you in Montserrat. Welcome to Catalonia!
The hotel
Since its construction in 1563, the building of the current Hotel Abat Cisneros has been intended for the accommodation of pilgrims. The transformation of these old outbuildings into a hostel at the end of the 1950s turned it into an emblematic establishment. Recent renovations modernized the facilities, and visitors are currently offered spaces of excellent quality and comfort. Its location in the heart of the sanctuary, very close to the basilica, allows you to enjoy an incomparable stay, in a pleasant and quiet atmosphere, and with magnificent views of the mountain and the Llobregat valley.
